In coral reefs, when the water becomes too warm, the algae die, turning the bright and colorful coral into a pale white color. The reef is no longer the vivid yellows, blues, purples, reds, or pinks we love so much.
Like a bit of yeast that contaminates the whole bunch, sin works similarly. It changes us. The Bible teaches us how to prevent the world from corrupting our souls.
James 1:27 reminds us to remain unspotted from the world.
When it comes to sin and evil deeds, a little compromise that may seem harmless usually has a great potential to give birth to even more wrongdoing in our life. Before we know it, we have lost our spiritual color.
Therefore, we must avoid evil. Instead, become spiritual salt through seeking the Lord with the perseverance of faith. Salt preserves. Salt enhances the flavor. It is like adding color to something that does not have color.
Besides perseverance of faith and avoiding sin that entangles us, what do we do to keep from losing our color? So if we go back to the verse in James, it commands us to visit orphans and widows in their distress. We are to care for the ones that need someone to care for them. We love and serve others as our Lord loves and serves us, and we refuse to let the things in this world corrupt us.
“Pure and genuine religion in the sight of God the Father means caring for orphans and widows in their distress and refusing to let the world corrupt you.”
James 1:27 NLT
“Let me tell you why you are here. You’re here to be salt-seasoning that brings out the God flavors of this earth. If you lose your saltiness, how will people taste Godliness? You’ve lost your usefulness and will end up in the garbage. In the same way, you’re here to be light, bringing out the God-colors in the world. God is not a secret to be kept. We’re going public with this, as public as a city on a hill. If I make you light-bearers, you don’t think I’m going to hide you under a bucket, do you? I’m putting you on a light stand. Now that I’ve put you there on a hilltop, on a light stand—shine! Keep open house; be generous with your lives. By opening up to others, you’ll prompt people to open up with God, this generous Father in heaven.”
