The fish is a ancient Christian symbol created hundreds of years ago due to the threat of death when the church was under intense persecution. A believer would draw half of the fish in the dirt and another would complete the drawing in order to communicate their shared faith. Christians are still dying for the faith, and the fish is still used to communicate our faith to each other and to the world.
They say the symbol may have come from the story of the loaves and fishes, the breakfast of fish Jesus cooked the disciples on the beach at the Sea of Galilee after the Resurrection or it could be the story of the coin found by Simon Peter in the mouth of the fish. The story as I see it is about the good news of grace. The free gift given to us by Jesus through his atoning death – our salvation.
As a side note the Greek word within the fish is ICHTHUS, which means “fish” in Greek. It’s also an acronym for the phrase Jesus Christ, Son of God, Savior. It is broken down to Jesus | Christ | God | Savior | Son. Five letters.
Five is also associated with Grace through out the bible. The fifth letter in the hebrew alphabet is "Hey". It is the letter that was added to change the name of Abraham and Sarah after their story of faith.
Of course I would be remiss if I didn't mention that on the fifth day God started His creation of living creatures on this earth with creating sea life and birds.
Now, with this special "Day Five IXOYE Fish Shirt" you can share the beautiful history of God's grace from the beginning to now.
